need assistance for home and living expenses

I am a thirty-four year old women. I have had many years of unfortunate events. These events have led me in to the place that I am in today. I live with a friend, in her house. She has been kind enough to offer me assistance, with my living arrangements. However, because I only went to school up to the eighth grade, followed by a G.E.D. when I was old enough. I have not had the social or educational skills needed to become a productive independent person. Most of my life I have been dependent upon men for financial support. Recently it came to me. I had always been a type of endenchured slave. I earned my stay,I made very little decisions and I only received the esentials needed for living;soap, food, clothes (minimal). When I would make my decision to stand up myself I became a bad person. I would then be thrown out or leave when they were gone. Never taking anything except the clothes I had on. No where to go, no family,no job,no car.For many years of my life I have somehow survived this way. I am tired of it. I want to have my own house,my own job,my own life. I only need enough to start. Is there any help for me out there?

Hi Angie :-) First of all, I want to encourage you, because you are doing well in many ways that maybe you don't see. You got your GED, which is very important! I work for a technical college where they teach Nursing, as well as other courses. Any person with a GED can attend the school, and they offer financial aid. We get a lot of people coming into the school who are from some pretty poor countries and have come to try to make a better life for themselves. When they graduate, they'll be making twice my salary. Congratulations too for taking responsibility for your life. Some people never do that. In a "Divorce Recovery" class at church they said when you get divorced, you get custody of yourself. I thought that was cute. It's also true. Have you tried going to church? Churches are like people, you have the good ones and you have the bad ones. Find a good one, somewhere where the pastor will listen and guide you and help you. The other day a woman came into the school and she was trying to put her life together. She's working at a grocery store bagging groceries during the day and plans to go to nursing school at night. Believe it or not, some of these big chain grocery stores pay very well and provide medical benefits. Fill your mind with good things. At the library they have teaching tapes from some very successful people, like motivational speaker Tony Robbins, or Dale Carnegie, or Norman Vincent Peale. You have to continue to encourage yourself and educate yourself and build yourself up physically, mentally and spiritually. Someone said once "Pray Toward Heaven; Row Toward Shore." I hope you have a very good day, or as the man who used to host the Good Morning America program used to say "Go out, and make it a good day." Sincerely, Nancy
